Philippines, the world’s largest exporter of nickel ore, exported $1.95 billion worth of the metal in 2024, with 98% going to China and 2% to Japan. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo emphasized the need for export diversification and invited India to play a bigger role in the sector, including processing and value chain development. With India currently sourcing $707 million worth of raw nickel from Russia, Norway, and Japan, Manalo suggested that realigning supply chains could benefit both economies. He also highlighted ongoing discussions about a bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between India and the Philippines, aimed at strengthening trade ties in key sectors like automotives, batteries, IT services, pharmaceuticals, health, and agriculture.
