A qualified account and personnel professional, Ms Shepherd, left, has worked in local government for 24 years and managed a wide range of services.

Council leader Heather Caird (Con) described her as a “strong leader”.

“Diane has already played a key role in making sure that the council remains in a good financial position,” she said.

Ms Shepherd said she was “delighted” to get the job.

“I have worked at the council for 21 years, and so I know how special the district is to the people who live and work within it,” she said.

“We know that there will be challenging times ahead, but I am looking forward to working closely with our staff, communities and partners to make sure we continue to deliver quality services that are good value for money.”
