RTÉ is reporting this morning (here) that the county will not field a senior camogie team in 2025.
Last year was a tough one for them. That RTÉ report states that the decision comes in the wake of heavy League and Championship defeats last year and Colum O’Meara stepping down as manager. Mayo Camogie PRO Fiona Duffy is quoted as saying that players’ work commitments and travel plans contributed to the lack of sufficient numbers this year.
When the county senior team was revived after a long absence, as the Covid pandemic was beginning to lessen its grip in 2021, it met with initial success. That year they won League promotion and then followed it up with victory in the Nancy Murray Cup. After that initial positive experience, however, the going has been harder in the years since then, with last year in particular proving tough for them.
That RTÉ report confirms that the county will continue to field teams at U16 and Minor levels. We have scored good success in camogie at underage level in recent years, winning the All-Ireland U16D title in 2022 and reaching the All-Ireland Minor C final in both 2021 and 2022. Hopefully continued positive underage performances will, in time, provide the basis for relaunching a county team at senior level once again.
