Blanchett knows exactly what movie she's in, and she seems to be having the time of her life fitting herself into the mold of a video game heroine.
All the edges have been sanded down so it can be safe and mainstream, but they went too far and there’s almost nothing left. It’s technically a movie based on 'Borderlands.' Not much else.
Loved the movie, laugh a lot. Now i want to play the entire Borderland saga.
Wow, it's so hilarious and exciting film. Don't know why critics so harsh. So much laughters from robot Claptrap. I enjoyed it much much better than the annoying third person talking in Deadpool and Wolverine. Get a taste, everyone! This film is Dungeons and Dragons in space!!!
You can see the jokes, but most of them don’t land. Still, there is some neat design work if you squint.
ny movie with this Manic Pixie Ellen Ripley in it can’t be all bad, though Borderlands sure as shootin’ aims for it.
Nothing that works about the games has been adapted intact in this ugly, boring, truly inept piece of filmmaking, a movie that was mostly shot years ago and should have been shelved even longer. Like, maybe forever.
The effects are so shoddy, you wonder if the entire post-production budget was blown on fine-tuning Cate Blanchett’s cheekbones. It’s so incoherent, you half expect to see the notorious director Uwe Boll’s name on the credits.
Unfortunately, for the time being, the star of “Tár” and “Blue Jasmine” is stuck as the lead of the worst movie of the year — a grueling, 102-minute endurance test that’s as lifeless as the video game it’s based on.
Oh man, it's so unfair what they did with this movie. It's an action movie, and the CGI is decent. Forget the rest; it's not meant to be a cult classic or taken seriously. Just watch without commitment, relax, enjoy, and have fun! Seriously, watch for yourself, ignore the score and the critics, and judge for yourself. I watch a lot of game-based movies, and this one is pretty okay. Sadly, I won't have the chance to see it in theaters anymore, and I'm afraid this might discourage other game-based movies from being made. It's totally unfair!
IN A NUTSHELL: This adventure-action movie is based on the best-selling video game of the same name. The crazy cast of characters goes on a mission to save a missing girl who holds the key to unimaginable power. The movie feels like a mixture of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Wars. The colorful film was directed by Eli Roth who also co-wrote it with Joe Abercrombie. Already, the film has been nominated for and won several awards at various film festivals. For what it’s worth, I’ve never played the video game, so I’m basing the movie’s value on face value. So many video games have attempted to translate their popularity into a feature film yet have not faired well. The Borderlands video game is one of the best-selling video game franchises in history. If you’re a fan of the video game, comment down below! I’d love to hear what you thought of the flick! THINGS I LIKED: The cast is absolutely fantastic and includes Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis. Arianna Greenblatt is adorable and hilarious in everything I’ve ever seen her in . She was so cute in Love and Monsters. Other cast members include Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramirez, Ariana Greenblatt, Olivier Richters, Haley Bennett, and the voice talents of Jack Black. Fun fact: Eli Roth had shot the first version of the movie back in 2021, but it was decided to market it as a PG-13 blockbuster, so Tim Miller took over the project. Based on the drastic changes to the tone of the film, Steve Jablonsky had to completely rewrite the musical score from what Nathan Barr had created. Lots and lots of action! Unfortunately, the sequences aren’t entirely memorable. The visual and spoken humor is quirky and irreverent. Most of the spoken humor comes from Jack Black’s robotic character. There’s a twist in Act 3 I didn’t see coming. Some of the CGI looked like it belonged in a video game. Plenty of interesting creatures to be entertained by. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE: I’ve heard from some of the fans of the video game that they have been super disappointed with this movie. None of the characters are very relatable. I had a hard time getting invested after only 15 minutes and was mostly bored throughout. It kind of feels like they just wrote a list of required elements and then checked off the boxes without really getting creative or even following the charm of the video game. You can feel the reshoots in the movie. There is something disjointed about the whole movie. Most of the humor doesn’t land. There are backstories but they’re easily dismissed and not shared with the audience. TIPS FOR PARENTS: Profanity and crude language Lots of violence (bloodless) Firearms, knives, bombs, and other weapons are used Tons of destruction
Probably going to get crazy hate for this but I genuinely liked the borderlands movie. The lore pretty much held solid for the most part. The set design and costume design was really meticilulous and intricate a very well done. The cinematography was dlne very well and the action scenes were well shot and well choreographed. The acting could have been maybe a bit better, but it was good. The Borderlands movie exposes the game's flaws. The cheesy bad jokes every other moment are excused for great gameplay don't translate the same in film. If it was some random dumb fun sci fi film, it would have been better received, but it was taken seriously and that's not Borderlands. Borderlands is an action treasure hunting game full of bad jokes and some good ones that balanced out by high adrenaline moments. Recommend to go see it, even if you are a fan of the games or not.
It's staggering to think how much money and how many talented actors were wasted on this pathetically written and directed mess of a movie. The only thing more shocking would be if a studio hired Eli Roth ever again.
Entertaining (to some extent), but the COMPLETE lack of character development throughout the movies makes it seem like something that was made in a rush. The environment was well crafted and there is SOME witty lines said every now and then... but it's all in general quite predictable and overall unimpressive. Honestly, quite a waste because it had great actors, a well developed lore (thanks to several iterations of the games) and a decent **** bad writing and directing killed this opportunity of making something awesome.
