  • Record Label: Matador
  • Release Date: Feb 22, 2000
  • Summary: Aside from the noisy "Cherry Chapstick," the tracks on And Then Nothing showcase a mellower sound for the Hoboken, NJ three-piece, which disappointed some long-time fans but certainly won over critics.

  1. Instead of the pleasing pop potpourri of their last album... the 13 songs on And Then Nothing . . . flow together subtly, all texture, mood and shade.... Yo La Tengo's tenth collection of warm, tiny songs is by far the finest in their careers...

  2. Easily one of 2000's most accomplished albums, And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out may not be as immediately appealing as some of the group's more upbeat albums, but it's just as enduring, proving that Yo La Tengo is the perfect band to grow old with.

  3. Here the trio trade in the constant reliance on the fuzzed out guitars that led the charge of their steady rise through obscurity for the more subdued moments that have occasionally reared up in past projects.

  4. The arbiters of mellow have turned the fully realized indie pop of their last and most accessible effort, I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One, inside out, exposing a softer, fleshy side that's more akin to some of their earlier outings.

  1. Classic. Arguably their best (even though I don’t think so but I could definitely see someone making a case).

brilliant, stunning, exeptional masterpiece of extreme proportions.

It's chilling, relaxing, and relatable, and more approachable than most YLT records. I think it has proven itself very worthy of all the critical attention and is easily one of the best albums of the 21st century. Expand

It is full of mood and atmosphere and is like velvet on the brain. A similar vibe to the likes of Sparklehorse or Low with a dose of sertraline. It's an album that is really easy to get lost in but also easy to lose track of due to the length of it. If I am totally honest, it is probably 20 minutes too long and more focused and edited version could have been worth an extra star. That said, the length allows some of the tracks more room to breath and allows them to branch off into little jazzy improvs at times, making the album that bit more special. "Our Way To Fall" is an early highlight but the first 6 tracks are all excellent. The second half of the album is also excellent but is more ambient and has a few more testing moments like the 18 minute final track. Expand
