This is Chur

Chur can be found in the east of Switzerland in the canton of Graubünden. Switzerland’s oldest city is a popular travel destination because of its old town and the Bernina and Glacier Express railway lines.

Discover Chur

On a walk through Chur’s old town, you’ll discover the historical flair of this Graubünden city. You cannot help but marvel at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, which dates back to the 12th century. The Grisons Museum of Fine Arts Chur showcases an important collection of works from Graubünden – including works by Alberto Giacometti. Speaking of artists: Chur is also home to the futuristic Giger Bar, a tribute to the creator of “Alien”.

The old town of Chur

Chur’s old town is probably one of the most beautiful old towns throughout all of Switzerland. Here, you’ll encounter historic buildings, winding alleyways, and boutiques, cafes, bars and galleries wherever you look. Treat yourself to a guided walking tour of the city or enjoy the charm of the old town with a coffee stop with a view of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption.

Panoramic rides on the Bernina and Glacier Express

The world-famous train route starts from Chur with the Bernina Express. The panoramic train takes you over viaducts, past beautiful landscapes, and over passes and mountains to Tirano in Italy. The Glacier Express starts in St. Moritz, stops in Chur, and continues on to Zermatt. This train also takes you through the Alps, showcasing mountain rivers, glaciers and picturesque villages. Both are magnificent panoramic rides offered by the Rhaetian Railway.

Around Chur

Your first destination from Chur is its local mountain Brambrüesch. You can take the gondola up to the top of the 1,600-metre-high mountain and enjoy fantastic views from up high. Chur is an ideal starting point for excursions to Graubünden’s mountain resorts such as Arosa, Flims or Davos at any time of the year. On the way to Flims, you will pass by the imposing Rhine Gorge, known as the “Grand Canyon of Switzerland”. Equally impressive is the Viamala Gorge near Thusis. For wine lovers: just a few kilometres from Chur, you’ll find the Bündner Herrschaft, one of the best wine regions in Switzerland.

Experience Chur for less

When you stay for one night or more, you’ll be able to benefit from the Guest Card Chur. This will allow you to use public transport free of charge (except for the Bernina or Glacier Express) and will give you discounts on various activities.
