Comedian Sinbad: 'Celebrity Apprentice' boss Donald Trump likes to 'see people miserable'
- ️Tue Jun 11 2013
Last week, comedia Sinbad had audiences at The Tropicana laughing through tears, but before his set he sat down with NJ.com to discuss everything from not cursing in his routine to what really happened during his appearance on the 'Celebrity Apprentice.'
NJ.com: How do you feel about the standup comics now-a-days and does social media play a big role?
SINBAD: Every generation changes, even the generation before me, we changed after them. So I try not to judge them. I think social media is good and bad. With social media at least you can publicize yourself, so if you use it that way it's good. But social media can also create comics who aren't funny, or bands who can't sing. But that's just the way it is right now and it's not going to change. I think another thing social media does wrong is the critics. Now, if you hate someone, all of a sudden you have a blog against you. Basically I just keep doing my thing and I don't care.
Do you feel that by not cursing in your routines, it hindered your career?
SINBAD: Yes, it did. I didn't realize it, but I did curse when I first got started. My dad was a Preacher, he didn't really care, he supported me no matter what, but when he came to my show one night I cleaned up my act. What I found out was that I was able to touch on every subject, I mean everything, drugs sex...It's not the language that you use, it's the setup. Then I remember a woman came up to me afterwards and said I'm glad there's a comic I can go see. So I thought, there's people who can't go out and see comedy because of language. I figured I am just as hard edge and controversial. Once I got to L.A. they decided because I wasn't cussing that I wasn't controversial...so they allowed my language to decide what kind of person I was and I was always fighting that. I don't have to prove I'm bad, my name is Sinbad, what more could you want or need. Is there a comic out there who you think can beat me up? No!
When was a definitive turning point in your career?
SINBAD: There is no one moment. It's a bunch on moments. It's like training for sports, it's like building and building. Star Search is when people saw me on TV, but before that I was selling out comedy clubs with no name, and I earned that. I would come to clubs and nobody knew who I was, but you can't do that now. Now it's like if you aren't on TV they won't come see you. Back then people would go to comedy clubs hoping to discovered. I was blessed, Star Search was the first time I was really recognized. I died my hair blond so it would be easy to see it was me. One day, I was walking down by UCLA just after Star Search and someone screamed, "Is that Sinbad?"; And I thought, yea that's cool.
What can we expect in your future projects?
SINBAD: I got a band. I did music when I first started my life and then I let it go for 30 years. But my daughter sings, she has a band and my son is in film school. So I picked up a guitar and tried to learn it, and also play the drums and percussion, so we have a band, Memphis Red and the Stank Nassty Band. We just came back from Aruba, my daughter sings with us, she has her own band...I'm also writing a play along the lines of "The Death of Soul Music"; or "Who Killed The Soul";, because what happened to R&B music?I have more movies and writing. Sitcoms, I don't think they work because...reality shows are too real. You can't write a sitcom about crazy uncle because crazy uncles are already on TV, so I want to do more a mixture of a news show with real news, like network news but my twist on it.
Speaking of news, you made the news when you were fired from 'Celebrity Apprentice,' would you go back?.
SINBAD: Not that I should've never done it, but it's like this, Donald Trump does everything for him, his whole show is that he likes to see people fight and I think he likes to see people miserable. I think he really likes watching other peoples careers unravel and then he does that fake thing "Hey you were great," but really he builds you up to watch you fall. I've seen entertainers...who we love and have created a brand, but they fall apart on that show..I don't want to see that side of me..behind the scenes there is a lot of that stuff going on to set those moments up. I did it, but I wish they would've aired what I said. See, I would do that show if it was live. For a guy like me, that show live, I would've handled my business. Don't cut me up, I'm a comic, don't cut up what I do.
You are married to your wife for the second time, is there any advice you would like to give people?
SINBAD: No advice. I think people get back together because it just happens. She got re-married during the time we weren't together but I didn't. I stayed single for 10 or 11 years. It's too much to keep, plus I live on the road, I already had my kids, I didn't have time to have more kids, I just didn't have the demeanor to do it. So if I was to get back with anybody it would've been her, she was the only one, because I can't start new. Plus, I'm already puppy trained, I know what corner to pee in [laughs], so I'm good.
Fans want to know, where does your red hair come from?
SINBAD: My father's mother is Irish and my cousins on my father's side are red heads.
