Chiquita Brands
COMPANY Corporate ancestry dates back to the 1871 introduction of bananas to the United States by importer Lorenzo Dow Baker and, in 1872, by railroad magnate Minor C. Keith. Baker's efforts were incorporated in 1885 as the Boston Fruit Company, and the competitors merged in 1899 as United Fruit Company. Acquired Cuyamel Fruit Company in 1930. Renamed United Brands in 1970, and Chiquita Brands International in 1990. Owns Atlanta AG, Frupac, Mundimar, Solar Aquafarms.
CBI has apologized for human rights violations across Central America, and acknowledged lending its ships for use in the U.S.-backed overthrow of Guatemalan government in 1954 and the failed "Bay of Pigs" invasion of Cuba in 1961. More recently the company is alleged to have paid multi-million-dollar bribes to terrorists and supported death squads in countries where its bananas are grown.
