Political drama concerning the confirmation of the President's choice of Secretary of State, Robert Leffingwell. Accusations fly in many directions, such as Leffingwell's alleged communist ties, and alleged homosexual experiences of the investigating committee chairman, Brigham Anderson. Preminger purchased the rights to Drury's novel for $200,000 and made this film outside of the Hays Code.
