George C. Scott stars as wealthy heir Justin Playfair, who, crushed by the death of his beloved, has dreamed himself into the identity of Sherlock Holmes, tweed costume and all. Apparently a plot has been hatched to end his life, and the detective must use his powers of deduction -- or sophistry, inventing clues out of wordplay and coincidence -- to see himself through to the end. A strange movie, dear and unexpectedly sweet.
