ABSTRACT
Robert Angier, nineteenth-century London husband of attractive young woman Julia McCullough and friend of magician's assistant Alfred Borden, becomes his once-close pal's sworn enemy following his wife's death at a performance. Years later, the pair -- both wildly successful magicians, still full of resentment towards one another -- take to sabotaging each other's stage performances, a habit leading to tragedy when the two engage in a heavy-handed war over pulling off the "ultimate" illusion.
