Sometimes funny, mostly serious, and always heart wrenching and touching! What else can you say when a child to celebrate Yom Kippur is asked who they want remembered says, My mother, father, brothers, sisters, " and to which the nun asks what their names are and the child says, "I can't remember". Or another child who when asked her name says, "Jew Dog"? The humour and cunning of the sisters against the Nazis keep it from becoming maudlin and oppressive. A perfect balance of humour, tears, happiness, debate, and thought provoking issues keeps the mind working and prevents it from becoming a film dirge. The actors are superb, especially Lilli Palmer as Mother Catherine, as she stays true to the teachings of her faith at the risk of her life and those of her sisters. Even though made about 1960, it is filmed in black and white which I think keeps the story, characters, and the issues to the forefront. My one regret is at this time it is not available on DVD or VHS. It is a real shame, because it is not aired widely. I found it by accident on a syndicated television network. It is a very overlooked film that deserves a wide audience.
