Working-class woman Stella Martin moves up in life by marrying Stephen Dallas, prominent in society though no longer in possession of the fortune he once had. They have a daughter, Laurel, but Stella is never able to assimilate into the upper class. Stephen and Stella divorce and he remarries, to a past fianc�e. Stella comes to realize her own mannerisms are a significant handicap to Laurel, limiting her advancement; she sacrifices everything for her daughter. Bittersweet soap opera. Received Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Remake of Stella Dallas (1925).
