During the Napoleonic Wars, Billy Budd is forcibly conscripted into service on a Royal Navy ship, the HMS Avenger. He is well-liked by everyone, except Claggart, the cruel master-at-arms; when Billy accidentally kills Claggart in a confrontation, Billy finds himself accused of murder and facing likely execution.
