Probably some of the best performances from many of this stellar cast: Don Johnson pulls deep inside to portray the misunderstood Ben Quick. Both he and Judith Ivey make Faulkner's characters uncomfortably too real. Ava Gardner, as Minnie Littlejohn, brings class to a character meant to be just another cheap, contemptible woman. Even Jason Robards, Cybill Shepard, and William Russ rise to the other actors' standards in this underrated rendition of a Southern classic.
