During a robbery of a Union Army payroll by Confederates guerrillas, one of John Wayne's close friends is killed; an insider had sold information making the robbery possible. After the war's end, Wayne continues his pursuit of the traitor. The two parts of the film seem somewhat disconnected from each other. Wayne is too old and too heavy for his role. Director Howard Hawks and John Wayne have essentially made the same film three times, with Rio Bravo (1959), El Dorado (1966), and Rio Lobo. This is Hawks' final film, and by far the weakest offering of the three.
