A spinster in a decayed Louisiana plantation evades the intended demolition of her property by highway construction because she believes it harbors a terrible family secret. Originally intended as a follow-up to the success of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), reuniting Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. However, Crawford backed out. Received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Set Decoration, Best Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song, "Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte."
