A beautiful collie, sold by her cash-strapped family to a far-away kennel owner in Scotland, escapes and makes her way back to Yorkshire. Originally intended as a B-movie (MGM paid only $10,000 for the rights), it was filmed in color and given a higher budget than normal. Lassie spawned seven sequels, a radio program and TV show. Novelist Eric Knight was killed in a WWII airplane crash before release.
