The Gay Divorcee

The Gay Divorcee (12-Oct-1934)

Director: Mark Sandrich

Writers: George Marion, Jr.; Dorothy Yost; Edward Kaufman

Based on a book: The Gay Divorcee by Dwight Taylor

Producer: Pandro S. Berman

Keywords: Musical Comedy

Ginger Rogers is Mimi Glossop, who seeks a divorce from her largely absent husband; the plan is to arrange an adulterous affair with an Italian "correspondent" and have it caught in the act. But after he utters the passphrase she mistakes world-renowned danger Guy Holden, played by Fred Astaire, for the correspondent. And of course they fall in love. Although Astaire and Rogers had been paired as second leads in Flying Down to Rio (1933), this is the musical that established the two in the public's eye. Won first Oscar ever for Best Original Song, "The Continental", and received nominations for four other Oscars including Best Picture.
