Band of Angels
Director: Raoul Walsh
Writers: Ivan Goff; Ben Roberts; John Twist
From novel: Band of Angels by Robert Penn Warren
Keywords: Romantic Drama
Upon the death of her father Amantha Starr finds, to her great surprise, that her mother was black; this classifies her as a mulatto slave to be sold to help pay back taxes due on the estate. Former slave trader and present plantation owner Hamish Bond buys her for the princely sum of $5000. He gives her opportunity to escape; she voluntarily stays and becomes his mistress. Also in the house is Rau-Ru, an educated black slave played by Sidney Poitier, who was raised as Bond's son but harbors great resentment at his station. Film is an attempt at another Gone with the Wind (1939) but did not encounter box office success.
