A fire aboard one of Cyrus P. Wentworth's ships, the Wentworth Castle, killed 400 and also resulted in the loss of a fortune in financial bonds; soon after, Wentworth is shot to death in his office by a person unknown. A variety of suspects present themselves as possibilities, including Dick Fleming, son of a rival shipping magnate and suitor for Cynthia, Wentworth's daughter. Cynthia hires Mr. Wong in the hopes of clearing Dick's name. Fifth of the six Mr. Wong mysteries, and the last one starring Boris Karloff.
