REVIEWS
Review by John Levin (posted on 20-Sep-2007)
This film must have meant a lot to Charles Laughton. He co-produced it with Erich Pommer in 1938 after starring in an impressive string of roles in America. He plays a street musician named Charles who happens to be 39 years of age as was Laughton at the time. His character is a man who isn't quite good enough as an artist and as a man. As a foretaste to his Quasimodo the following year, one can only guess what personal demons Mr Laughton was trying to exorcise. I DO like the character he portrays and I think this is worth a look.
