REVIEWS
Review by anonymous (posted on 19-Apr-2006)
I only found out about this book when I spotted it a Franklin, MI library sale. I was very surprised, then deeply charmed to find out it was not a raging cultural tract like Main Street, Babbitt or The Jungle. It was a deeply thoughtful and nuanced love story about a relationship between a deeply conservative and decent judge in his late middle age and a fiery and intelligent young social activist. You couldn't help but feel as though it was semi-biographical. Years later at 2:30AM in the middle of a sleepless night, I accidentally discovered a supremely faithful and heartfelt recreation of this moving sorry with Spencer Tracy starring as the judge. The director and the stars apparently shared a deep and abiding love and respect in this story which pervaded every frame of every scene in the movie. If you are looking for a romantic and thoughtful style of cinema verite', this is the answer. Strong story; strong cast; strong and moving cinema experience.
