The Philadelphia Inquirer
NEWSPAPER Founded 1 June 1829 by Jesper Harding. He eventually merged the paper with the Daily Courier, titling the combined paper The Pennsylvania Inquirer and Daily Courier in 1839. He renamed it The Pennsyvania Inquirer and National Gazette in 1845. Jesper's son, William White Harding, assumed editorship in 1859 and changed the name of the paper to its present name in April 1860. Today it is the third-oldest independent newspaper in the United States.
