In 1956, protested required readings from the Bible in his public school by reading the Quran instead. His father, with the help of the ACLU, filed suit against the school district, the case finally being decided by the US Supreme Court as Abington School District v. Schempp (1963), in his favor. NYU professor Stephen D. Solomon wrote about the subject in Ellery's Protest, published in 2007.
