An aspiring pro baseball player, young Roy Acuff was forced into other pursuits as a result of health problems. He took up country fiddle and joined a traveling medicine show, performing both traditional and contemporary songs. After working with several bands, Acuff established himself as a solo artist in the late 30's and remained active until 1974. He became the first living musician inducted into the Country music Hall of Fame in 1962.
