British metallurgist Peter Hirsch studied under Lawrence Bragg, and is known for his studies on crystal defects, and showing the role of dislocations in plastic flow. He was among the first materials scientists to use transmission electron microscopy in metals research, and greatly advanced the theories needed to interpret these images. He has also conducted respected investigations into the structure of coal, and brittle-transition of steels.
