Claudia Alta Taylor was born in the family mansion, and one of the maids said she was as cute as a Lady Bird. The name stuck. Lady Bird was five years old when her mother died, and she was raised by her father, aunt, and the family servants. In 1934, she met Lyndon B. Johnson, who was then Congressman Richard M. Kleberg's secretary. Lyndon and Lady Bird were married five months later, and two years after that Lyndon was elected to Congress. The Johnsons purchased Austin radio station KTBC with Lady Bird's inheritance, added a TV station, and were soon quite wealthy. During the 1960s, while Lyndon was stoking the Vietnam war and blacks and women were demanding their rights, Lady Bird established the First Lady's Committee for a More Beautiful Capital. Later she championed the $320-million Highway Beautification Bill, to eliminate roadside billboards and junkyards.
