Suehiro Maruo
Born: 28-Jan-1956
Birthplace: Nagasaki, Japan
Gender: Male
Race or Ethnicity: Asian
Occupation: Artist
Nationality: Japan
Executive summary: Planet of the Jap
Autodidact Japanese painter and illustrator in the tradition of nineteenth-century muzan-e "atrocity print" woodblock cuts. His paintings are the stuff of nightmares: a girl's face tangled in snakes; a pair of Japanese soldiers suspended in midair, smiling sardonically; or a smartly-uniformed soldier cutting away the skin of a girl's face to lick at her eyeball.
Maruo's paintings are featured in the liner art of John Zorn's Naked City albums. His manga "Planet of the Jap" depicts an alternate reality where Japan invades America during World War II, dropping atomic bombs on Los Angeles and San Francisco, the plot admittedly nicked from the Philip K. Dick novel The Man in the High Castle.
