Executive summary: US contractor, beheaded on Iraq videotape
Nick Berg was an independent contractor installing communication equipment in Iraq. In late March and early April, U.S. authorities imprisoned him for 14 days to determine his business and purpose in Iraq, delaying his already-planned trip home stateside. He was last heard by telephone on April 9, until his body was discovered by an American military patrol on May 8. A video was released on May 11 via an Islamic militant website, showing the beheading of Berg, with audio. On the video, Berg identifies by name his parents and siblings, a lengthy Arabic statement is read, and then an individual, purportedly Abu Musab al-Zarqawi takes a long knife and saws through Berg's neck, Daniel Pearl-style.
From a statement later released by the perpetrators, "Nation of Islam, is there any excuse left to sit idly by? And how can free Muslims sleep soundly as they see Islam being slaughtered, honour bleeding, photographs of shame and reports of Satanic degradation of the people of Islam, men and women, in Abu Ghraib prison?"
