As a young man Hans Eysenck fled the growing Nazi regime and resettled in England, where he studied psychology and pioneered the English practice of clinical psychology. He became a leading critic of Sigmund Freud's theories, and developed his own theories of behavioral genetics, intelligence, and personality. He also studied the health risks of smoking, and the effects of behavior therapy on cancer and heart disease. His Race, Intelligence and Education was widely criticized for linking intelligence and race, but at the time of his death he was among the world's most well-known and respected psychologists.
