AKA John Robert Schrieffer
Born: 31-May-1931
Birthplace: Oak Park, IL
Gender: Male
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Physicist
Nationality: United States
Executive summary: BCS Theory of Superconductivity
American physicist Robert Schrieffer studied under John Bardeen and worked with Leon N. Cooper on researching superconductivity, wherein electrical resistance fades and certain metals attain near-perfect conductivity at temperatures approaching absolute zero (0 Kelvin or -273.15 Celsius). Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer developed and published their BCS Theory of Superconductivity to explain this phenomenon of physics in 1957, and shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1972.
On 24 September 2004, Schrieffer was driving from San Francisco to Santa Barbara at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, and lost control of his car, crashing into another vehicle and killing its driver, 57-year-old Renato Catolos. At the time of the accident Schrieffer had nine prior speeding tickets and was driving with a suspended license. Convicted of vehicular manslaughter, he was sentenced to two years at the Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
