Grew up in Toronto, Ontario. A highly-ranked marathon runner, and member of the 1980 Canadian Olympic Team which never was able to participate because of the boycott that year. He set his personal best run, 2:14:43 in 1977, and won the Ottawa National Capital Marathon that year and 1978. Maxwell and his wife, Jennifer, created the first PowerBar at their Berkeley apartment kitchen in 1986. Sold his company to Nestle in March 2000, for $375M.
