Sandra Oh began studying ballet at age 4, and discovered theatre at 10. She took drama courses and appeared in school plays through high school, and did her first professional work in commercials at 16. Her parents, very traditional Koreans who married in Seoul, strongly disapproved, but Oh persevered. She was a regular on the late 1980s Canadian TV drama Denim Blues, and appeared in a handful of Canadian films and TV movies. She landed a role in an American sit-com, If Not For You, and moved to Los Angeles, but the show was canceled before she had finished unpacking.
She played Robert Wuhl's no-nonsense secretary on Arli$$ for several years. She has also been seen in the tender Armageddon drama Last Night, the girl-gone wild Diary of Evelyn Lau, the stripper melodrama Dancing at the Blue Iguana, and the wine country road trip Sideways. Sideways was directed by Oh's then-husband, Alexander Payne. She now plays the repressed Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey's Anatomy.
