MIT researchers create device that can recognize, track people through walls

Having x-ray vision might be a possibility in the future.

A group of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created a device called the RF-Capture that can see people through walls.

Without requiring any body equipment or sensors, the RF-Capture can capture any person’s body through walls and other occlusions by transmitting wireless signals and reconstructing their silhouette by analyzing the signal’s reflections.

The RF-Capture can also know exactly who the person behind the wall is, trace a person’s mid-air handwriting and determine how a person is moving.

Although the results may seem basic, the researchers said that RF-Capture is sophisticated enough to tell 15 different individulas apart by analyzing their heart rate and breathing pattern.

The RF-Capture could be used to spy on people, but MIT plans to use this technology for movie-making. The researchers said actors would no longer have to wear body markers when it comes to motion capturing if they were to use the RF-Capture.

MIT also plans to develop a spinoff product that can be used at home for eldercare and could also be programmed to control lights, thermostats and TVs.
