The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks changed the wording of its constitution on Friday to remove "male" from the list of membership qualifications.
Members from the fraternal group's 2,230 lodges nationwide voted on the change, which is effective immediately. The exact vote was not available, officials said.
While most lodges have women's auxiliaries, all 1.3 million Elks members are men.
