Reed Abelson
I am a reporter covering the business of health care for The New York Times. I write about how the delivery of health care can be influenced by the costs to consumers and the potential profits to providers.
What I Cover
I’m fascinated by the changing landscape of American medicine as more doctors and nurses work for hospitals and corporations, and large health conglomerates account for a greater share of the care we get. I also cover the business of health insurance and how it has changed since the debut of the Affordable Care Act and the increasing privatization of government programs like Medicare and Medicaid. I aim to be endlessly curious about how the health care system works — and doesn’t — in the United States. I am based in New York.
My Background
I’ve been at The Times since 1995, starting as a business reporter writing about mutual funds, accounting and charities. I was part of an incredibly talented team of reporters covering the pandemic, helping to describe how the U.S. health system fared under tremendous strain.
Before joining The Times, I was a staff writer for SmartMoney, where I wrote in-depth features on investing, and before that I was a reporter for Forbes, where I profiled public and private companies. I started my journalism career at the Philadelphia Business Journal, reporting on health care, venture capital, technology and the ports of Philadelphia.
I graduated cum laude from Bryn Mawr College with an A.B. in English literature, and I earned an M.A. in English literature from Columbia University.
I grew up in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Journalistic Ethics
Being accurate and fair is incredibly important to me. I try to approach every subject I write about with an open mind, and I enjoy hearing different opinions about the topics I cover and to report thoroughly enough to describe the nuances of what can be difficult subjects. I aim to be as respectful as I can toward patients and other individuals grappling with the health care system. You can learn more about The Times’s ethics guidelines.
