Takeo Kamachi (JPN) had competed in rapid-fire pistol at the Olympics in 1968, 1972, and 1976, with a best placement of 12th in 1968 and =12th in 1976. But in 1984, he upset defending champion Corneliu Ion (ROM) to win the gold medal. Ion did win the silver medal.
