Zensys' Z-Wave Technology
Zensys' Z-Wave technology offers RF-based two-way mesh networking for residential and commercial locations.
LAS VEGAS—Zensys, a provider of wireless networking technology for residential control and reading applications, presented its family of Z-Wave chip sets. Z-Wave technology is a RF-based two-way mesh networking protocol that allows for the control of thermostats, garage door openers, light switches, and residential appliances. The current 100 series chip set is shipping since 2003, but Zensys announced the 200 series, which will replace the 100 series by May of 2005.
Z-Wave technology is also designed to provide interoperability between home control systems of different manufacturers. Companies that are part of the Z-Wave alliance and that are actively developing products using Z-Wave include Intermatic (timers), Leviton (lighting control), Wayne Dalton (garage door openers), Techniku (shades), and Carrier (air conditioning systems).
One of the great advantages of Z-Wave's technology is its mesh networking capability that allows for the wireless signals to be routed from device to device until the target device is reached. This for example enables users to control their 1st floor lighting from the driveway by sending the appropriate command from their remote to the garage door opener, which in turn forwards the command to the next closest node. Users will also receive a confirmation for the issued command, which will be routed back to the user's remote control in the same manner.
