Critics Consensus

The Grand has moments of comic ingenuity, but the jokes in this poker satire often miss.

Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness For every scene that goes nowhere -- and there are more than a few -- there's some comedy gold lurking around the corner. Rated: B Sep 2, 2008 Full Review John Anderson Washington Post Just showing us what ex-sitcom stars and Bavarian directors do in their spare time isn't quite enough to justify The Grand, which does for poker what Best in Show did for dogs while completely avoiding any jokes about poker-playing canines. Apr 10, 2008 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times There may be too many cooks here, too many TV stars trying to make an impression in a relatively high-profile independent film, but they connect just often enough to leave you smiling. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 4, 2008 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens THE GRAND is a Royal Flush!!! Nov 6, 2019 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews A typically uneven fake documentary... Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 8, 2012 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid Decided that sticking to the formula was more important than letting something organic or crazy happen. Audience Member I don’t get the bad reviews this was a great mockumentary 4.3 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/21 Full Review Audience Member Surprisingly not funny, at times irritating Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review l g first watch last evening. glad i picked this one while surfing through Netflix offerings. lighthearted and enjoyable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review adam b I really appreciated this comedy mostly for the fact that the entire thing is improv, which makes the comedy/jokes hit differently, which worked really well. If you enjoy mockumentaries, I would definitely recommend this film to you Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is hilarious. Ray Ramano plays a Michael-Scott-esque character masterfully. Sure, the humor is stupid- but so is it stupid in beloved shows like "The Office" or "Parks & Recreation". I couldn't believe it scored so low here. I've never disagreed with a rating on this site until now! I would say it at LEAST deserves like 70%! Personally, I give it 5 stars in hopes to boost the rating at all. Truly goofy, silly movie with multiple laugh-out-loud moments. Crude language but most movies have that these days anyway. Woody Harrelson is great & believable in this role. & while the cast is full of caricatures & exagerrated personalities (as the aforementioned beloved TV shows that are critically acclaimed do,) they are acted VERY well by the cast. Great movie, don't believe the 40% rating! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Perfectly acceptable little picture with a stellar cast. Fun, quirky and grounded.
