Le Notti Bianche follows the story of Mario (Marcello Mastroianni), a loner wandering the dark alleys of a new town, who meets Natalia (Maria Schell), a sheltered young woman waiting for her love to return after a year's absence. Dealing with unrequited love, among other things, the movie is a visual joy to watch. Each shot is gorgeously composed, the black and white cinematography is stunning, and the lighting is spectacular. There are a couple of scenes that drag (the dance scene in the café, for example), but, overall, the film is an excellent primer for the Visconti films that followed. With the images extremely beautiful it tells the story of an ordinary young man Mario, who met an unusual, like from another century girl, fell in love with her and almost made her fall in love too... Visconti and Dostoyevsky--Here two different worlds collide unambiguously - the modern, cold, indifferent stylized world and the old, more intimate and hearty one, and this collision makes many ironical and sad situations... Reflect reality as well as a dream that falls a bit short!!
