Critics Consensus

It doesn't take its terrific premise quite as far as it should, but Splice is a smart, well-acted treat for horror fans.

Hank Sartin Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Perri Nemiroff Shockya.com Fascinating and exciting yet disturbing and potentially upsetting. Rated: 4/5 Aug 13, 2010 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) I love the character of Dren, which is nerd spelt backwards. I loved the relationship between her and her putative parents: Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 11, 2010 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views I cannot recommend Splice because while the concept is genuinely disturbing, it is mostly poorly executed so you may only get a hot fifteen minutes, and I am being generous, of visceral horror. Jan 4, 2025 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Gets points for being bizarre and incorporating evocative body-horror elements, though the story itself doesn't offer up anything substantial. Rated: 2/5 Sep 22, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review In concept alone, not to mention the first exciting half-hour, the film promises greatness before failing to live up to those promises with a second half that feels emotionally disengaged and a finale that’s rushed. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 18, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

David W Now this the very definition of a devisive cult movie. Is it disturbing? Yes. Is it weird? Absolutely. Is it to my taste a great movie that takes risks but is superbly well made? Yes. This extremely well acted, challenging sci-fi horror explores some very interesting philosophical and moral ground whilst simulaneously being hugely entertaining with superb special effects. It certainly won't appeal to everyone given the subject matter, especially as the movie progresses into its final phase but personally I really enjoyed my time with this one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review James N It’s a phobe but it’s like it was made for Amin. There’s clone sex that is almost a fucked her to death situation with incest undertones. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Waniya S Kinky as hell anyways Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review stephen b It's pretty disturbing, but in a way that forces you to think about the ethics of certain practices that may not be too far from reality. And then it just becomes really disturbing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review David P I was pleasantly surprised. Weird, messed up but well worth a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/18/24 Full Review Jordan Y Super weird and different. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews

Synopsis Geneticists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in creating hybrids of species. When they propose the use of human DNA, their pharmaceutical company bosses forbid it, forcing them to conduct experiments in secret. The result is Dren, a creature with amazing intelligence and physical attributes. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams, but as she begins to grow at an accelerated rate, she threatens to become their worst nightmare.
