A simple-minded but visually exciting experience, full of blood, violence, and ready-made movie quotes.
Ghosty Very cool story, artistry, and action. Very violent. Excellent comic book style movie, based on a Frank Miller graphic novel, similar style to Sin City. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/26/21 Full Review Mark M The film is overall a cinematic masterpiece but made me question it's unconventional premise Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Megan K My absolute favorite movie of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Audience Member Such a disrespect to history and to the persians. Its like watching a videogame. Interesting history, sadly the movie doesnt honnor the history so well. But I did learn more about the type of women I want in my life. Strong. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Luis I This film offers an epic, mythical, and fantastical retelling of the famous Battle of Thermopylae. It sacrifices realism and historical accuracy, as it’s based on a graphic novel rather than historical records. This influence is evident in the stylized depiction of events, the fantasy elements, and, most notably, the tone and visual style. The film’s visual approach is distinctive yet divisive. The grainy texture, heavily desaturated, high-contrast color grading, and noticeable CGI create a video game-like aesthetic rather than immersing the audience in a mythical world. While not inherently negative, this artistic choice didn’t entirely work for me. The action sequences benefit from dynamic camerawork, with speed-ramping and zooms heightening the intensity. However, given the director’s later overuse of these techniques, the moments that should feel epic instead come across as hollow and overindulgent. The repetitive nature of the storytelling, depicting the Spartans battling endless waves of Persians with minimal struggle or character development, further reinforces this impression; again resembling a video game. A subplot involving characters who remain in Sparta fails to impact the plot meaningfully, emphasizing the film's prioritization of spectacle over substance. Ultimately, it’s a testosterone-fueled, action-packed epic that leans heavily on visual flair but lacks depth in theme and storytelling. Some viewers may enjoy the spectacle despite these shortcomings, while others may find it lacking. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Amir S A brilliant film, full of historical and directorial fun. I've seen it at least 15 times (if not more). Highly recommended.
