david w one more hollywood tribute to the traitorous losers of the treason of 1861, which some people still refuse to admit was terrible and should be done by now. they like to sell tickets in the south so they make the southern traitors 'ladies and gentlemen'. the movie was very well filmed and edited, but if the script stinks, it's hard to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member In every war...in every age...the forgotten weapon is food--The Great Cattle Robbery!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Frances H The kind of shoot 'em up Civil War flick that Hollywood did so very well, with a slick tongue in cheek script, plenty of star power, glorious technicolor, and a real cattle stampede (although How the West Was Won had the best stampede scene, but that was buffalo). They don't make movies like this anymore. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/14 Full Review ashley h Alvarez Kelly is an incredible film. It is about a Mexican cattleman who has little interest in the Civil War except to make money. William Holden and Richard Widmark give excellent performances. The script is well written. Edward Dmytryk did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this movie because of the drama. Alvarez Kelly is a must see. Synopsis Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) is a Mexican cattle rancher who is doing his best to stay out of the Civil War. He has no interest in which side may win or lose -- Kelly is far more concerned about his own survival, and about making money. He soon finds himself in the middle of the conflict, however, when a confederate colonel (Richard Widmark) captures the rancher and forces Kelly to help his soldiers steal a nearby herd of cattle, which they desperately need for food.
