Critics Consensus

Misunderstood when it first hit theaters, the influence of Ridley Scott's mysterious, neo-noir Blade Runner has deepened with time. A visually remarkable, achingly human sci-fi masterpiece.

Pauline Kael The New Yorker This movie loses track of the few expectations it sets up, and the formlessness adds to a viewer's demoralization -- the film itself seems part of the atmosphere of decay. Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Scott Cain Atlanta Journal-Constitution Ridley Scott ought to be a set decorator, rather than a director. In Blade Runner, he loses sight of the story while devoting all his attention to decor and lighting. The decor and lighting, it must be admitted, are stupendous. Rated: 3/5 Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Zaki Hasan San Francisco Chronicle Still profound 18 years after its sell-by date, Blade Runner remains worthy of acclaim and analysis even as it exists in a "future" with very little resemblance to the one that came to pass. Nov 18, 2019 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Thanks to its powerful visuals and brilliant acting, it is a movie that does not get old: no matter how many times you revisit it, there will always be some new elements or symbolism that stand out with each rewatch. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Rarely in the annals of film history has a movie received a complete critical and popular reevaluation in as short a period of time as Blade Runner (and those of us who championed it since Day One plugged it at every opportunity). Rated: 4/4 Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills One of the 1980s greatest sci-fi films—or greatest films, period. Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Christopher D One of the best movies I've ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Kevin M Hard to imagine that Harrison Ford could be upstaged in any lead role after Han Solo and Indiana Jones but I think that Rutger Hauer (Roy) actually did it in this film in his role of a lifetime. And of course I must gush about Sean Young's (Rachel) mesmerizing performance as well, another role of a lifetime. This film flipped the Sci-Fi genre on it's head with a more somber, almost depressing setting that was wonderfully executed and memorialized with that eerily original Vangelis soundtrack. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review y y Ford gets few lines and does little with them. This flaw sinks the film for me. Young and Hauer provide a few engaging scenes. Any novelty in the settings is overwhelmed by the dreary low intensity lighting. I dislike one particular unresolved detail in the ending to the film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Dan D An excellent movie from start to finish. It never gets old. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Leprechaun K Ridley's best work. Easily a Top 10. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Tyler N This rating is way too high and based on nostalgia (imo). I was somewhat disappointed. However, there were some cool scenes and aspects. One of the characters in this movie is definitely unique—and you don’t know to root for or against him (you will eventually find out). Overall, it’s okay. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
