Critics Consensus

A sort of Blair Witch Project crossed with Godzilla, Cloverfield is economically paced, stylistically clever, and filled with scares.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Cloverfield is tiresome, dumb and horrid, and just in case you didn't get that I'll say it again: this film is tiresome, dumb and horrid. Don't go. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review David Fear Time Out Rated: 3/5 Nov 18, 2011 Full Review Jordan Hoffman UGO For gasps and thrills and movie monster mayhem, the film is a success. It's not flawless, but if you shove that aside, I guarantee you that you will have a gas at the theater. T K My favorite "monster" movie as well as found-footage type film of all time. Feels very real (great acting performances, a very realistic depiction of Manhattan and thus many scenes feeling too reminiscent of 9/11) and it somehow holds up in time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Audience Member Cloverfield surprisingly bites your soul with shocks of no other, having us witness the terror from below rather than above. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Fachrul Ulum F The funny thing is you follow your friend to rescue her girlfriend 🤣 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Josh A This is just an absolutely amazing found footage movie. It's basically a monster movie but from the perspective of the people who live in the city. It starts off normally, with a party, and then around 20 minutes in turns into an immersive nightmare. So let's start with the party. It effectively introduces the characters and explains what they're like and what their relationships are. It's a great way to start the movie, giving us a sense of the characters, which are the most important part of the movie. Then, the main part of the movie happens. When Clover wakes up and wreaks havoc. It's brilliant. It's entertaining, nightmarish and the ending is brilliant. It's tragic, but brilliant. There's a chance the couple survived, though, as the camera survived, so who says they didn't survive? Maybe I'm just in denial. I don't know. Overall, amazing movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Bradley B Cloverfield is my personal favorite movie of all-time. The found footage style makes it feel like you are there in the middle of the chaos. The most underrated part of the movie is the character development. We get a very good sense of the friendships and romances prior to the "attack" in the movie. T.J. Miller is fantastic as the heel of the group and the cameraman. Liz Kaplan is great as the hot sort of emo girl who Miller has a crush on. The whole thing feels very real. It is the best movie I've ever watched in terms of portraying the realization that something existential is happening. The general sense of shock, dread, and ultimately, the acceptance of what is happening is done better than any other movie. The visuals with the military and the monster were way ahead of their time. Despite being made in 2007, the visuals would look great even in 2025 (as I write this review). Outstanding movie. 5/5. If you like mass chaos/Armageddon type movies, this is an absolute must-watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Douglas L The movie looks good, the CGI is ok and has aged well, the action is also ok, but! The characters.... God.... They're all insufrible!
