Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times Wafting into theaters after sitting on the back burner for the last decade, "Cook Off!" is a shrill, gloppy mess of a mockumentary being served up well past its "best before" date - if there ever actually were one. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter Cook Off piles some better-than-this comedians into a culinary competition whose dishes look as unpalatable as the film itself. Nov 18, 2017 Full Review Nell Minow Movie Mom All the ingredients for a tasty entertainment. Rated: B+ Nov 17, 2017 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Melissa McCarthy has what amounts to as an extended cameo. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 5, 2020 Full Review Amelie Lasker FF2 Media While the humor is overtly silly and light, I found some of it quite troubling. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 26, 2018 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue ... neither witty nor insightful in its comic observations, instead relying on low-brow gags and stereotypes out of desperation. Audience Member Not worth watching..... Even with small role from Melissa McCarthy. Didn't make me laugh once..... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Capturing The Moment M Just a fun comedy movie, not taking anything seriously. Melissa McCarthy had such a fun but small role in this movie. Her husband was hilarious as well. Well-acted, again not supposed to be the best movie of the year, just a satire of cook-off shows. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Early W I thought this might be another Christopher Guest mockumentary style hit but oh was I wrong. First off I want to clear Guest's name and say he had nothing to do with the film. The cast and crew seemed to want to imitate Guest's style of film making yet the improv runs too deep (and not in a funny way) and the awkward moments linger into uncomfortable territory. There really isn't much to critique when it comes to the acting. You have a good line up of seasoned comedic actors/actresses but there is only so much you can do with a bad script. Improv moments should come as an "Ah-ha! I think this line would be funnier here!" Not used as a crutch for the majority of your dialogue. You can tell during certain scenes that the actors were struggling to think of something to say. This diminishes the power of the punch line when the majority of your conversations are just awkward small talk. Also despite her being plastered across the majority of the promotional material, Melissa McCarthy is hardly in the film. For me, this was the only good thing about it! I find her shrill, nasally voice annoying as hell and her comedy follows suit. Why does Hollywood still put her in everything? Oh well, could have been worse, could have been Amy Schumer. Just watch any of Guest's funnier mockumentaries: This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show, or even the lower rated Mascots was funnier than this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Kate W Uncomfortable. That's the key descriptive word for this one. I love "Best in Show" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous", so I had hopes when this popped up in my Suggestions. Oh, no. The gags are boring or awkward, go on for WAY too long, and most of what they say starts to blend together in their weird, high-pitched hybrid midwest-Canadian accent after the first 20 minutes. And WHY is Melissa McCarthy's face all over the promo for it? I'd rather watch "For Your Consideration" again. You know what? I didn't mean that. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Eric S Bad, bad and so bad that is might be good? I enjoyed this movie as it had its moments and interesting angles but I would not recommend to anyone else with precious time and I would never watch it twice. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review K B Horrible - no one should watch this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
