Critics Consensus

Karla Sofía Gascón is Emilia Perez in a swaggering musical crime thriller of genre-bending fascination that is also an unapologetically trans story.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Whatever its failings are as a musical, Emilia Perez makes up for it as a tragic melodrama. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 15, 2025 Full Review Jack Hamilton Slate Rather than enhancing the film’s narrative, the music functions as a loud and gimmicky distraction from storytelling that can’t be bothered to do even the most basic work of connecting its audience to its setting and characters. Jan 23, 2025 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian It’s cheesy and loopy and fun to watch but I think its Oscar buzz is a bit over the top. Rated: 3/5 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Troy Ribeiro Free Press Journal (India) Emilia Pérez is a film that thrives on contradiction— grave yet surreal, profound yet playful. It is both an ambitious work of reinvention and a narrative balancing act that occasionally wobbles under its sheer complexity. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 10, 2025 Full Review Leonardo Garcia Tsao La Jornada ...the film may seem absurd and implausible, but the strange thing is that it works as a fantasy...[Full review in Spanish] Mar 5, 2025 Full Review A.S. Hamrah n+1 The film is a preposterous nightmare of first-world self-regard. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Dane K Beautiful film! The music and message are fantastic. There's a reason this was in my top 5 films of 2024! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Tina C I had no idea Zoey could sing! I was captivated to the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Travis K This is like if The Rocky Horror Picture Show was in Spanish and go 13 Oscar Nominations! Completely Electric! Three brilliant performances by the three leads. Personally not my favorite of the 10 nominees but I think Emilia Perez definitely deserves the award recognition. I plan on seeing it on the big screen again. I loved the songs, all the choreography was very impressive. Mi Camino might be my personal favorite track. Go in with an open mind! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/25 Full Review j Not the most exciting movie in the world Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Thomas A Some admirable sequences and performances, but yeesh. The terrible script undermines any of the good work. Offensively mashes together very serious political human issues with a kind of bad soap opera plotting that has no idea what it's trying to say, and does a corny job saying even that much. One of the worst films I've seen. Jaw-droppingly bad and also just kinda boring. Given the subject matter it should have been riveting, but the execution felt like a bad tv special. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Rob Liked…great story and acting… everything was unexpected from the plot twist, singing and dancing …drama, action and music… the appeal is so broad… International hit!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Read all reviews
