Critics Consensus

A poorly scripted history-rewriting exercise with mediocre acting and unconvincing CGI battle scenes.

Empire Magazine Rated: 2/5 Jun 1, 2007 Full Review Brian Tallerico UGO Flyboys doesn't just use cliches - it wallows in them, feeling more like a film based on old war movies than actual history. Mar 24, 2007 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle While director Bill nails the sheer spectacle of squads of SPADs dovetailing in flames into the wide blue yonder, the earthbound action (much as it was in another sputtering epic, Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor) is strictly laissez-faire. Rated: 2/5 Oct 1, 2006 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com There's even a scene involving an old Zeppelin thrown in for good measure! Rated: 2.5/4.0 Sep 7, 2020 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Unfortunately, all that I see for Flyboys is it flying into the sunset and away from the box office charts with its rudder tucked beneath its wings. Nov 8, 2019 Full Review Burl Burlingame Honolulu Star-Advertiser Each air battle has been scripted as a set piece that not only shows off the capabilities of the pilots and their machines, but also advances the plot. Alan g "A poorly scripted history-rewriting exercise with mediocre acting and unconvincing CGI battle scenes." That review says it better than anything i can originally say. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Justin S This was one of those movies that came out years ago that I have always wanted to see, and I’ve just never had a chance to watch it. I should’ve left that wanting in the past. This was quite possibly the worst written film I have ever seen. No acting could save it. There was zero development of the characters and it was just poor dialogue. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review KB B I thought it was a pretty entertaining film that was kind of long. Yeah those old planes could never fly like that but it was still worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Patricia R Well I really liked it. And I thought the acting was good. I don't care what anyone says. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Shay C Pretty good. Planes are awesome and the dogfights are nice to watch. Definitely a family movie. The historical accuracy of the weapons and planes is nice. Dialogue can be a bit clunky, but frankly, that's okay. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Alex B While seeing planes go to war for the first time was cool, I had a difficult time buying the romance and it was hard to become attached to any of the characters. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
