Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Gibson's robust directorial technique brings an undeniable punch to the combat scenes ... Elsewhere in the film, however, there's a sledgehammer lack of subtlety that is only partially mitigated by Andrew Garfield's impressive performance. Rated: 3/5 Jan 29, 2017 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times If they gave out awards for "most movie in a movie", then no other movie need turn up. Rated: 3/5 Jan 27, 2017 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) A rousing tale of Pacific War heroism that has more in common with jingoistic Wayne staples such as Sands of Iwo Jima or The Green Berets than anything in the 21st century, this is wearily formulaic film-making. Rated: 2/5 Jan 26, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The trouble is this proper hero worship is drawn out and overstated in a bloated film that could lose 20 minutes of first-act exposition and 15 minutes of battle scene redundancies from its 131 minutes. Rated: 2/5 Oct 16, 2024 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film For a film about a conscientious objector, this film may be viewed as unjustifiably violent, but Gibson still presents his hero in the best possible light, and the love story electrifies the screen. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The superbly shot battle scenes aside, Gibson’s traditionalist sensibilities show up in how he shoots everything else which is a perfect fit for this particular film. It’s easy to get lost in the period he visualizes. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Jacob D Desmond doss was a truly incredible man and Andrew Garfield's portrayal was perfect. The combat is truly breathtaking and there were many scenes where it felt as though i was holding my breath. Perfect film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review T D Masterpiece. But, they should have gone into greater detail about the unit Doss was a part of. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Brian G This is a great story, very uplifting and the actual real life people talking at the end really sells the based on true events label. Here is my criticism the writing made the characters speak as if it was modern day at times. I was never sold on this being the 1940’s, it felt like millennials who time traveled to the 1940’s. Good movie but it’s held back by its flaws. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Mister S Watching this movie was an incredible experience—I loved every second of it. It was deeply emotional, truly inspirational, and completely redefined the idea of what a man should be. At first, it seems like a story about fighting, but it becomes so much more. The film beautifully illustrates that true strength isn’t just about combat; it's about kindness, selflessness, and the will to help others. Even when the world stood against him, he held onto his beliefs and made the best of every situation. He didn’t just become a hero—he became a real hero. Not someone defined by a cape or superpowers, but by his unwavering commitment to saving lives, even those of his enemies. He embodies what it truly means to be human. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Fer S It is not bad, but the introduction was unnecessarily long and there were some very hollywood scenes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Reed S Best movie I have ever seen I watched Hacksaw Ridge for the first time last night, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Andrew Garfield’s performance as Desmond Doss was incredible he brought so much heart and conviction to the role, making Doss’s story even more powerful. The film’s depiction of war was intense and brutally realistic, but it never lost sight of its emotional core. Seeing Doss stick to his principles and save so many lives without ever firing a weapon was inspiring. The cinematography, direction, and score all came together to make this a gripping, unforgettable experience. This is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates powerful storytelling, history, or war films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews

Synopsis The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.
